The "XII. International Plein Air at the Otto Niemeyer-Holstein Studio" continues the tradition of successful artist Plein Air events held every two years at the ONH Studio: "Ufer-Anfang und Ende der Welt," "MEER-Sehen," "Zeitzeugen - Spuren der Veränderung." The VII. Plein Air focused on the theme "Malerfreunde" ("Painter Friends"). The 2010 Plein Air was dedicated to "Reiter auf dem Großen Bären – Otto Niemeyer-Holstein in der Schweiz" ("Riders on the Great Bear – Otto Niemeyer-Holstein in Switzerland"), coinciding with the exhibition from April 11, 2010 to October 17, 2010 at the New Gallery at the Otto Niemeyer-Holstein Studio. Ninety years earlier, Otto Niemeyer-Holstein began his artistic career in Switzerland, largely in Ascona at Lake Maggiore. In light of this, for the IX. International Plein Air, four Swiss and four German artists were invited. In 2014, the theme continued with the X. Plein Air titled "Current Art from Switzerland."
Since 1994, 87 artists from Argentina, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Lithuania, Poland, Switzerland, Great Britain, Chile, Iran, the USA, Ukraine, Estonia, India, and Germany have worked at the Otto Niemeyer-Holstein Studio.
For the twelfth time, artists will be invited to Lüttenort, on the property of painter Otto Niemeyer-Holstein. Located at the narrowest point of the island of Usedom in the northeasternmost part of Germany, this place serves as a connection between Northern and Southern Europe.
Otto Niemeyer-Holstein, one of the most significant painters of the German Baltic Sea coast, highlights the unifying element of his work: water. A key trait of the painter was his desire for contact and exchange with other artists. He also served for several years as an official ambassador for art as the president of the Baltic Sea Biennale.
In November 2019, personal invitations will be sent out based on the recommendations of the jury members, and the event will be announced in the press and by artist associations. The application deadline is April 15, 2020.
At the end of April, the jury, chaired by Sabine Curio, will meet to select eight artists from the applications for the XII. International Plein Air at the Otto Niemeyer-Holstein Studio in Lüttenort. The selected artists will be announced in the press.
Artists who are invited should, like Otto Niemeyer-Holstein, be "admirers of the visible world" (Joachim John), work figuratively, and be able to engage with the local environment: the island of Usedom and the artist’s estate in Lüttenort.
The Plein Air will conclude with a Studio Celebration on Saturday, September 12, 2020, and a small exhibition of the works created during the ten days at the New Gallery in the Otto Niemeyer-Holstein Studio.
